Professor Matthew Sadlier, HPFSS spokesperson and Professor of Psychiatry at University College Dublin, joins LBC’s Tom Swarbrick to discuss the powerful pull of smartphones on children and young people. He explains how a phone — always present and providing constant access to games, social media and algorithmically selected content — can contribute to compulsive use, disrupted sleep and an increasingly nocturnal pattern of behaviour. The discussion follows the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl whose inquest heard evidence about her escalating phone use and disrupted sleep. Our thoughts are with her family; no family should have to experience such a devastating loss.
