Safer Phones Bill Update

March 15, 2025

Despite overwhelming public support, cross-party agreement, and backing from leading children’s charities and education unions, the Government has weakened the Safer Phones Bill—delaying meaningful action to protect children from smartphone addiction and social media harm.

But the debate is shifting. Last week, Health Professionals for Safer Screens and our doctors were directly cited in Parliament, with MPs recognising the growing concern among paediatricians.

📢 Josh MacAlister MP:
“Thanks also go to Arabella Skinner and Dr. Becky Foljambe at Health Professionals for Safer Screens and all the health professionals they mobilised… witnessing first-hand the impacts of excessive screen time on the physical and mental health of the nation’s children.”

📢 Joe Powell MP:
“A doctor shocked the room when she said that amongst her peers, the impact of excessive phone use and social media on children is now the single main health concern they have. Not pollution, not smoking, not diet—this is the issue that most worries paediatricians today.”

📢 Sir Chris Bryant MP, Minister of State for Media, Tourism and Creative Industries:
“There is no option of inaction. There has to be action.”

The evidence is clear. The time for further research is over. Now, we need action.
