Dr Becky Foljambe, Dr Federico Campos and Arabella Skinner were invited to represent Health Professionals for Safer Screens at a Round Table with the Leader of the Opposition, Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch, Shadow Secretary of Education
Rt Hon Laura Trott MP, and Shadow Education Minister Neil O’Brien to discuss the banning of smartphones in schools for under 16s, and the wider harms that social media and smartphones may be having on children.
The meeting was held at the Shadow Cabinet room and participants included Jonathan Haidt and Professor Lisa Henderson as well as representatives from policy think tanks, campaigners, educationalists and charities.
That afternoon the Conservatives tabled an amendment which would have legally banned smartphones in schools. It was supported by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats but voted down by Labour so another missed opportunity.
